Before I teamed up with Chef Wo’se Kofi, I was a case worker at SCHARP Oasis House, located on the corner of 52nd st and Vermont in historic South Central LA. Oasis House has been around since the 90’s and it is like a well known underground safehouse for those of us dealing with life’s roughest conditions.
Oasis House is a community based mental health center offering an array of social services including, case management, mental health services, workshops, meals, clothing, and resources for navigating social/government funded systems. Oasis House has a diverse staff of 30 and serves up to 150 lives a day. This micro village in mental health is a gem and their staff exceeds its abilities in working with vulnerable populations. Unfortunately, the area around Oasis House, has nothing but fast food restaurants, liquor stores and the El Super Grocery store, but luckily we at Baba’s Vegan Cafe are ready to level out this injustice by offering our organic plant based cuisine. The Weekly Salad Lunch service, usually includes patties, salads, and or chilli, but is based around our delicious gourmet salads, with over 6 different toppings and homemade Apple Cider Vinegar Honey dressing. We make our salads affordable and loaded with vitamins and nutrients.
My Oasis house stay was a 5 year residency, working with a multitude of clients, on finding solutions to everyday barriers, programming of community events for members and staff, healthy living workshops covering meditation, exercise, diet, holistic nutrition, positive esteem, communication skills and yoga.
Ultimately, it was Oasis house where I learned the realities of the social service system and manifested a new identity in my relationship to social services and how to execute my goal of creating access to holistic services through food, yoga, herbal healing, meditation and resources for the global village. Being able to serve Oasis House as a vegan culinary artivist, rather a case worker but still maintaining the alignment of serving good to others allows me to see how everything comes full circle. The weekly salad lunch service has assisted us in boosting sales, and expanding the business to reach other community workers and organizations, plus, being able to still stay connected to familiar faces. With everything in alignment, we give thanks to the Oasis House Village, for all the work they do, and for supporting local small justice based business, like ourselves. Ashe! Baba’s Vegan Cafe Caters Black Women For Wellness
Brittany Green, aquarius, ucla alumni, actress, teacher, and programming coordinator for Sisters in Motion,(Urban Chefs Academy) of Black Women for Wellness, was out attending the monthly Banana’s event, hosted at Kaos (3rd Tuesday of the month), when her boyfriend delicately convinced her to suffice her appetite with a delectable spinach/kale patty. By surprise, she was enamoured with a sense of fulfillment. Flavors captivated her and created a sense of awe that she ate something healthy, vegan, in South LA and late at night. She later reached out to Baba’s Vegan Cafe, requesting an order for her organization Black Women for Wellness, located in Leimert Park, CA.
Black Women for Wellness’ mission is committed to the health and well-being of Black women and girls through health education, empowerment and advocacy. They do this by offering, holistic and western healing services and resources, that affirm the best outcomes for black women and children. In addition they serve as a resource center and advocacy group influencing public policies that directly affect black women and girls. They have such events like Sisters @ Eight, a community forum which brings hot topics and major health and wellness issues to the forefront of public conversation held on the 2nd Friday of each month and Kitchen divas where they facilitate live workshops focusing on a plant based diet. You can learn more about their organization, events, and programs at http://www.bwwla.org/ So we created a special menu, offering a full vegan meal( chilli, brown basmati rice, organic gourmet salad, and veggie patties). Once arriving at their Leimert Park office, we were blessed to encounter familiar faces, we have once known from moments long ago. Brittany and I went to undergrad together, and worked at the Community Programs office doing retention, holistic, peer counseling and advocacy work for black students. Chef Wo’se used to live across the street from one of their other programmers in the office. If this wasn’t the universe speaking then I don’t know what was. When you align with the highest, the wellness, the divine in you, you in turn are aligned with that outside of you. With these recycled connections it is in our destiny to only prosper. Our Nubian wellness community is larger than we can imagine, we just have to align and open our eyes. Serving healing food to an organization like Black Women for Wellness, who in turns serves our community through health awareness, knowledge, life skills, advocacy and resources, is the work we feel motivated by, the work that keeps us going, and affirms our role in the larger mission of Maat. We give thanks to Brittany Green and Black Women for Wellness for inviting us to be a part of their mission and we look forward to catering for you again. Love and Light. http://www.bwwla.org/ |
